Google Local (now Google Places) stems from its beginning as Google Maps and allows local companies to get an enhanced listing on a Google SERP when otherwise large national companies would hog all top ten places.
The map with pins (see the example below) comes with 2, 3, 7 or 10 company listings.
At first, Google would populate this map with 10 companies that it found in the particular category in any online directories, now you can claim your listing, optimise it, add photos and videos and even build links to it.
